Poz Pride
The other day while looking through Tim’s post, I like a suggestion of his, that may or may not have been tongue in check.
Has it come to be the time to hold a Poz Pride Day. Since we are a rainbow, and just as gay men were supposed to be hidden from society, so are we, maybe we need our own sort of Serological Stonewall.
This brings up an interesting parallel. Thirty years, or more gay men were supposed to hide, now we are supposed to hide. Interesting that we have created in internal dynamic that we fight against.
In any case, I’d certainly attend this Poz Pride Event, dorn myself as my alter ego at time when I write, Ms. Retro Virus, and throw those miracle once-a-day pills 7 day trail pack at the onlookers.

I didn’t so your questions nicholas. For me it would be pride in not being ashamed, proud to have the strength and courage to not only live with this, but also have the strength to participate in such an event. I think we should be proud of how we come together as a community in the face of adversity, and continue to do so even so with all this serosorting (including social) going on.
I don’t think having this virus is a source of pride, hell go and get all substrains and develop a supervirus and get your name in a public health journal and the come back to me. Now don’t be going and doing that literally, I’ll end up with another letter to the editor in FAB!
But we’ve managed to accomplish so much, the federal AIDS funding, research, participation on a lot of levels we weren’t included before (still a long way to go on that one), we continue to have the cojones to stand up to those who want to silence us, jail us, discriminate etc.
So ya I think we can be very proud of how we’ve taken devastation and come together individually, and collectively when no body could have given a rats as if the fags died. It is a struggle that continues today, albeit what appears to be a quieter and more polite form, including from those of which we are part of the same community..

I hear all you there, especially coming from smaller centres. I know it’s difficult. As many know I’m from Winnipeg. That’s where I first went public so many years ago, and then really exploded into the media in Regina. It’s very hard. It’s easy for me to say do this or that as I’m not working in a job where I do not want to face discrimination. I probably too would have cringed at the idea of a poz pride kind of event, but the times are changing and I can see it now.
I’m afraid you’re wrong Sero, my adorable 2 pound Chihuahua would be the cutest one there. Ya, proud is the only way I think you can put in the sense of not being ashamed, although how I manage to pull it off so gracefully will always be a source of pride for me.

anyway, poz pride should be a good idea, not in the sense of beeing proud of. it is more we are not ashamed
December 19, 2008 03:24 AM
you will be the cutest then

Thanks for bringing this up, Brian. A couple years back, the AIDS Committee of Ottawa chose POZ PRIDE as our theme for the Pride Parade. While making banners for the float during the gay men’s social, an interesting debate came up. Some guys didn’t like the idea of poz pride, saying, “I refuse to be ashamed of being HIV+, but I don’t think I’m proud either.” Other guys said poz pride was rooted in the fact of having survived and thrived despite the endless barriers society creates not to (as gay men, as gay poz men, as gay poz men who refuse to be ashamed, etc.). That debate didn’t really resolve itself in the end.
Brian (and/or other readers): What does poz pride mean to you? Is it the same kind of pride we talk about when we speak of gay pride? Or is poz pride different? What *is* poz pride?

I’ve heard this suggested here as well and my first reaction was to cringe. But I can see it’s merits. I too am in my early 40s and have had HIV for a long, long time. Thankfully I had a relatively benign course of HIV disease for effective treatment became available and I done very well on treatment. For me HIV is as much a state of mind than a physical or medical reality. And there are some deep scars related to the still-ongoing process of working out what having HIV means to me. Those scars are aggravated by the all too prevalent stigma that still exists amongst gay men, even in a ctiy like London where so many gay men have HIV.
The problem is that so few of us are open about our lives with the virus and what it’s meant and still means for us.
So I’d join you on a Poz Pride day - I’ve got a lot to be proud about.
